Fancy Feathers

Fancy Feathers

I am reasonably certain that the only craft at which I am not a virgin is that of making fancy, feathery headwear.  I LOVE hats and fascinators, and I put feathers on everything I can.  So, naturally, when my friend invited me to a fancy afternoon tea at a castle, my first thought was “I’ll have to make a new hat.”

So that’s what I did tonight.  She and I got together and made some cute pieces for our date on Sunday.  When I don’t have a ton of time to mess around, I like to start with feathers that are pre-arranged, and then add embellishments.

I didn't get to finish this one tonight. It started with a base of black feathers, and I added rhinestones and guinea feathers. I'll finish it off with some cute Skull and Crossbones items when I have a chance.

This one is simple enough to wear any day. I made it small and simple so I can try to get away with it at work.

I love the height of this look. It's a wonderful splash of excitement.

Breanna’s hat is flashier, which I love for special occasions.  For those of you who don’t already know about the infamous “bird nest” here is a picture of the hat I made and sported for The Muse’s rehearsal dinner.

The infamous bird hat. Why yes, there are eggs in that nest!

In addition to the millinery power hour, I also managed to get another set of blocks cut.  I was so intimidated by cutting at first, but now I definitely have the hang of it, and I’m excited about how quickly I’m getting them done.  I think I might tackle the Lime blocks this weekend, since Lime promises to be the biggest challenge.  Here are my blocks sitting in a row in the drawer.  So pretty!!!

3 sets down, 6 to go!

I have a lot planned for the weekend, but I have promised myself that time will be made for yoga and crafting.

XOXOXOXOX,

CV

About craftvirgin

Welcome! This blog is my way of documenting my journey as I learn to be an artist. I'm a 26 year old with a project list that fills a college ruled notebook, because I constantly see things and say "I bet I could make that!" Unfortunately, I have ZERO skills to execute any of those projects. I hope to teach myself how to "make and do" as I go, using YouTube, Google, and books. I am totally blessed to have a cousin near by to rescue me from most blunders, and I have a wonderfully creative and talented Sister-in-law to be my muse and provide long distance technical support. I've recently conquered a deep rooted fear that I totally lack the "artist gene," and I've decided the time to let my inner artist out is right now! I love tattoos, finger rolled hair, hats, feathery fascinators and other fancy accessories. I love to be around creative people and those who live alternative lifestyles, even if they aren't like mine. Someday, I want to be an urban homesteader. I'll do lots of things myself, including gardening, canning/preserving my own food, raising my own meat, and all sorts of madness that makes my husband question my sanity. I can't wait to start some projects! I hope you'll enjoy and I invite your questions, comments, requests or encouragement.

    • I’ve awalys suspected that of Fancy Nancy a neat-nik with lots and lots of great stuff arranged perfectly. I think if there was such a thing as re-incarnation (don’t get excited, Shirley McClain I don’t believe there is!), Fancy Nancy would be a Nordstrom’s store or Nieman Marcus! I’m jealous

  1. I didn’t know you had a blog! I love your craftiness and so struggle from the same, “grey-wool-suit-want-to-be-artist” syndrome. I’m very envious of you girls and your blogs and will be searching them daily for inspiration. Anyway…LOVE all the fascinators that your large bird hat has given birth to! I’m going to be pinning you blog all over pinterest.
    Miss you!

    • It has been a few years now and I thhogut I was getting over yours and Fancy Nancy’s Surprise Visit! to see baby Alivia! HOWEVER, looking at that beautiful closet and yes, very tidy spice rack, I am going to resume counseling. It still horrifies me I let you both in and then you had to stay to take care of Livi while I ran poor bleeding Scooby to the vet. As you both were walking out the door I thhogut, Whew, at least they didn’t see the kitchen! . But, I betcha you did after I left! Ugh! With sweet Conor my house keeps resembling that same day and I often look out the window for Fancy Nancy & Awesome Joanie(can’t do baloney)! Sooooo during next weeks visit if you would like to see sweet Conor, PLEASE DO NOT DROP BY FOR A QUICK VISIT!!! My psyche cannot take it. We can meet at a very tidy and organized mutually agreed upon location! ; ). In my mind my whole house looks like Fancy Nancy’s closet, however in reality it looks like 4 kids and gulp, 4 dogs live here with me! Oh, now I need a Tylenol! Hugs & kiss, Vicky

  2. You’ve isnipred me to take pictures of my closet. The world should know that I only appear to be organized. Thanks for keeping it real, mom. Love you, Fancy Nancy. Don’t forget your muck boots, if you all decide on a surprise visit to the farm. I need to give vaccines to the baby goats this week; if you want, I’ll hold off until your visit.
